VED and changing cars
Options
Apologies if this has been asked before, couldn't find relevant information doing a quick forum search.
My daughter is about to change cars, she currently pays VED by monthly direct debit. My understanding is that she will need to take out a new DD to cover the monthly VED charge before she can legally drive the new car, I assume that this can be done 'instantly' on line at the time of purchase, is that the case?
Does she then need to cancel the DD for the previous cars tax or does that automatically happen when the change of ownership slip is returned to DVLA?.
What would happen if she changes cars, sends off the documents to DVLA and before the documents reach DVLA the DD for the old car kicks in for another month? Can she claim that back as a refund or is there a way of cancelling the VED on line so that the payments stop immediately (on the day of purchase for the new car?).
Thanks

She would have to setup DD for new car when she registers for it online
For the old car i would cancel the DD once you have submitted the change of ownership online.0 -

Do the change of owner online. I got caught out by sending in the slip last year - despite having a proof of posting before the end of the month, DVLA refused to refund the additional month they took.
I made the same mistake two years ago.
I posted the V5 section on the 29th of April. The DVLA registered its receipt, probably correctly, as the 2nd of May.
I naively though that the fact that I signed it on 29th would count.
It didn't and of course I lost one months tax refund.
A lesson learned.0 -

Why didn't you just do it instantly online ?0 -

and CANCEL the DD , if the DD is cancelled the fee goes back to yearly and to the new owner , the DVLA have no way of checking which car you want to pay for and will not simply transfer the DD , it has to be cancelled and a new one with a new ref number set up0 -
