I need help processing a cheque made out in Australian dollars, which I expect to be around $20,000. What is the smartest way to do this to pay the lowest processing charge and get the best exchange rate?
Many thanks

The smartest way is to forget about a cheque and use a bank transfer instead.
Even better way is to use a currency broker:

Foreign cheques in UK are PITA.0 -
Grumbler thks, unfortunately the payee (a provincial solici has no facility to offer anything but a cheque. So still need to find the quickest, cheapest option.0

'Quickest' - maybe, but don't expect this to be really 'quick' (e.g. 4-7 weeks for Barclays).
It terms of the cost, all banks are likely to be about the same, i.e. very expensive.
It's hard to believe that in the 21st century even a 'provincial' solicitor in Australia is incapable of making an international transfer .0
