I've emailed the photos and can see them on the mobile but can't seem to transfer them anywhere.

Where do you want to transfer them to? A 'photos' folder on the phone?

There must be a dialogue for this in the email app on the phone - Save, Download, some command like that....

  • When you have connected the Android phone to the PC, slide your finger down the phone screen from near top left.

You should see a box showing 'USB for Charging, touch for more options.

    Charging Only
    Transfer files (MTP)
    Transfer photos (PTP)
    MIDI

Probably not relevant, but very old android phones (such as my gingerbread one) don't offer MTP/PTP, and instead give access to the sdcard as if it were a flash drive, and you just copy files to/from it that way. (Seems a lot less effort than trying to do stuff with MTP on my OH's newer phone.)
