Couple renting, one earner, two reference fees?

Me and my partner have lived in a number of rental properties before, so letting agents and their fees are nothing new for us. We're about to move again soon and this time around I'm not going to be in employment which means that from a credit check point of view, my partner's salary will be covering the whole rent. The agent we are likely to move with says they charge a flat admin fee per property, plus a referencing fee per tenant.

Is it normal in this sort of case for both tenants to have referencing done (and have to pay two referencing fees) even when only one tenant will be paying the whole rent?

    Is there a way round it (such as my partner being the only official tenant)?

    Not if the landlord or an agent acting on his behalf want you both referenced.

    IF only the earner is named as a tenant, but the LL then only has one person to chase in the event of unpaid rent/damages - even if you're not working, atleast they have the option of suing you.

    However no harm in asking if that satisfies the LA's 'rule' (wish) to collect a fee per named tenant.

    It is entirely up to the landlord/agent who he wishes to reference - or none at all.

    He does, whatever else, have to confirm "Right to Rent" for all occupants over 18 (even an 18yr-old child at 6th form),
