Car Insurance - comparision sites used to be good for me

I've always used the comparison sites to get a 'good' deal on insurance, but this year two of the 'direct' insurers were much much cheaper for once.
We have two cars, so we usually go for a multi-car policy. This year my renewal with Privilege was £1020 (£650+£370).
The comparison sites were actually higher than the renewal - very odd, I thought.
I have previously found the direct insurers much more expense, but I still went through their quote sites.
Direct Line was cheaper at a combined £650 (this does include the MSE £60 Amazon gift card deal).
Aviva was cheaper still, at a combined £580 (this includes £60 TCB).
I don't normally post about my savings, but £1020 down to £580!
The moral for me is don't ignore the Direct Line's and Aviva's - one year they may actually come good for you!
