Reliable online shared dealing service…that works!

Hi,
Can anyone recommend a reliable online share dealing service that works.
I know that a lot of the dealing services are not coping with the volume of traffic due to Northern Rock shares going up & down ….but if you are going to deal in shares you have to have the ability to buy them & sell them quickly….phoning up doesn’t really work as by the time you get through any profit you have made could have been lost!
So what service works & is reliable?
Thanks.

I would recommend:
1) HSBC InvestDirect who will charge you £11.95/trade but you do need to have a (free) HSBC current account.
2) Selftrade who charge £12.50/trade but have a referral scheme where you could get up to £80 for joining them (my own details are in post 242 if interested)
I have used them and am happy with them both.
However, you are always going to find that any online broker will sometimes have issues dealing with exceptional volumes or technical problems.

I used halifax online share dealing. Was fine. I gave up when I realised self picking shares was pretty much gambling.
When you start reading how the pro investors made an estimated 1 billion from the collapse in NR you wonder how a part timer can get a break.
imo tracker funds are the way forward and long term will give the same kinda result (so says efficient market theory). But hey im no financial advisor so best of luck to ya

uncle_buck, if you want a reliable service you will have to use a more expensive broker. Even then, on a busy day it's possible that you won't get through right away on the telephone. Suggests to me that you are day-trading, i.e. gambling rather than investing. Fine if you can accept the risk but it is a very easy way to lose money!0 -
Thank you all for your advice.
Yeah I realise that day trading has it's risks but if you tread very carefully it is possible to make a few quid here & there....but that does depend on being able to buy & sell at critical times.
I have read of quite a few people that have lost money as they couldn’t either buy or sell at the right time because of the online dealing service letting them down.0
