Could this be a PPI payment?

Hi all,


My wife received a BACs payment into her Natwest account on Friday for over £10,000. However, we have no idea where it came from, other than the fact it might relate to a recent PPI claim she put in towards the end of last year. She's called Natwest who, as of yesterday, couldn't shed any light on it's origin. The only reference is a number starting with 5000000000*.


We don't want to do anything with the money until we know whether it was transferred by mistake. Anyone have any advice on this?

Has she spoken to the bank and are they looking into it? If not ask them.

Yep, she spoke with Natwest... they had no idea where it came from.

Are they looking into it or have they provided an account number and sort code as to where the money came from?

If it had a natwest sort code on the money or even an RBS one then perhaps that might the way round it. Or if she had sent a PPI request then surely checking a complaints log would provide an answer if it was a loan PPI claim.

If connected to the ppi complaint, you should receive a letter in the next few days. Money travels faster than snail mail.

If not connected to that, and is an erroneous transfer, someone, somewhere may be making frantic calls to their bank.

Yep, we have absolutely no intention of spending it! If it's not ours, we want it to be returned to it's rightful owner.

One question; what are we supposed to do is we can't establish where the money came from? Does it have to remain in the account indefinitely?

Contact the Bank for the information.

Nobody here can tell you where the money came from or what you should do in the very extremely unlikely event that it cannot be traced.
