Unpaid item charges

December was a shocking month, so I've had £50 in unpaid item charges taken out today.

I looked back through December, & one of the unpaid DD was for £5.74. I might be dreaming, but I thought I had read that where the item is less than the charge (£10 a go, in this case), no charge would be made?

Looking at my statement, paying it would have tipped me over by £1.42, but they bounced it - but taking the £50 today has left me £20.07 overdrawn - guessing it's ok for me to have an unauthorised OD if they're the ones benefitting?

Never heard of this for all banks, but some banks may offer this. Check with yours.

What all (most?) banks offer is "a second chance to avoid fees"

Is £50 in fees not shocking?

I'd been doing an extra 25 hours a week overtime for several months, then at the beginning of November, my employer cut it all completely & took on a load of Christmas temps... Thank you Satansbury's. So half the income but all of the expenses, plus Christmas to boot. Shocking!

Do you not know what you are spending or have spent ?
MS money works great if you enter every thing you have spent.
    only on PC's though,

some one might be here to give you some APPT

Good for going back an seeing what dross you wasted.
  • Could you get an overdraft instead? Save the charges?

I got caught out a few years back on a late pay from work, the bank paid certain direct debits and not others and charged me a fair bit (I think about £60) the following month which again made me overdrawn, lesson learnt!

I think it's always best to know your largest bill and try keeping that amount there all month round (pay it regardless) if you don't have any savings and then you can never be caught out again! Not always easy I know.. But I have a relatively small overdraft of £250 to save me from any mishaps.
  • If charges were taken in January I would suggest that in all probabilities the charges referred to items returned in November.
If this is true then February will bring more charges based on returns for December.

It would help if the OP chose to tell us which bank charged him.
