Anti-Fungus mask

Been living in Emergency accommodation (maisonette) for a year. The main bedroom has a bit of grey mould on the walls and ceiling (two external walls with little insulation - the walls are noticeably colder than rest of property). I can't get the council to even inspect it, but my asthma is getting worse and worse - GP is saying I am using too much ventolin (feel like I can't do anything right lol). I've had to stop sleeping in there this week, but we only have two beds for a three person family so I'd rather use the room if I could.

So, I have to sort it myself. I am using a dehumidifier, ventilate the room and heat it (waste of time, tiny radiator and it hardly takes the chill off the 2.5 x 5m room).

I am planning to wipe the walls and ceiling down with vinegar but worried about getting fungus in my lungs (I am a bit sensitive to mould). It'll probably take a few attempts because I have back problems, but will try and get it done in one day.

Is there a mask that will prevent me inhaling the mould spores? I know to wash and change clothes afterwards.

Once the mould is wiped down, after letting the walls dry out (won't be using much water obviously), I plan to put insulating wallpaper on the walls. Does anyone know if this actually does insulate walls? http://www.wallpaperdirect.com/products/wallrock/insulating-lining-graphite-4mm/97025

I don't see that I have any choice.

Ask for advice about masks from Screwfix? They do all kinds of masks for particles and vapours etc, plus paper overalls if you want to bin the lot when finished.

3m 4251 masks.. about £15-£20 depending where you buy it.
nothing else will do the job you need if you really do not want to inhale even a speck of it.
Using it when working with very very strong/nasty chemicals and nothing gets through it.
  • Brilliant, thank you

Use Dettol's mould and mildew remover spray and do it properly. Give the walls an initial clean up with this, before finishing off by spraying the walls with it and allow it plenty of of time to dry.

Masks as above. 15 from Amazon. I can post links later when on a proper computer.

Don't use vinegar and, especially, don't use bleach. Plenty of moulds will revel in the use of either. They will clean the surface, but the mould lives deep in the wall, and will just feed on the residue. Plenty of specific mould sprays about, and they work.

HG Mould spray is very good, but produces quite a strong smell but you should be ok if wearing l a mask as the smell comes from inhaling very small particles of the product. £5 from Homebase.

    It also inhibits regrowth.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

If you are going to buy a 3M face mask, make sure you go to a reputable supplier. There are Chinese fakes around.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
