Car repair invoices/receipts to buyer

I will have a potential buyer coming to view my car in a few days. No doubt that I should provide my car's MOT certificates to him. I can tell him what parts have been newly repaired in the last couple of months.

My question is if I need to give all of the invoices/receipts of my car parts maintenance to the buyer. I can show these to him for evidence but don't want to hand them all over to him as my full name and home address are shown on these invoices. My concern is that they can be misused for identity faults when they are held by someone else.

Is it necessary to give all of the invoices to the buyer, in order to prove my car maintenance history?

It would depend what your buyer is willing to accept. If you have recently had work done/parts fitted then the invoice may be needed should the buyer wish to make a claim under any guarantee/warranty. Also, if he buys the car he will have sight of the log book which will have your details on it. Also, if he's coming to your house then he will have you address.

No legal requirement. But if a seller said to me that I could see invoices but couldn't take them with the car, I'd suspect dodgeiness and think about walking away. Nothing personal against you.

And who's name is on the log book?

I say this as somebody who has been subject to minor league identity theft (and has two old cars with a lot of previous owner's invoices)

Surely your full name and home address is on the V5C so they will know your details anyway?

If your not selling it from home expect to be treated as a dodgy dealer and low offers or people just thinking its too dodgy.

A receipt for car repairs is not going to be valid ID to open a bank account etc.

    Your worrying too much

MOT History is available online https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk
Most names & addresses are also online via 192.com etc

I have a ring binder full of invoices from the previous owner of my Audi & I wouldn't have thought they could be used in ID fraud in any way.

You would need a utility bill, bank account details & photo ID to commit fraud against you
  • A documented history file can add to the resale value of a car. It certainly has done for me on 2 car sales, esspecially the one where I was the second owner, the history file had the original purchase order and every piece of paper since (first owner was also a receipt keeper like me!) and I was selling to a very knowledgeable buyer.

If you listed the car as having a full service history or regularly serviced a buyer is going to expect to go away with a bundle of paperwork which is of no use to you once the car is sold.

As has been said, they will have your address anyway on the V5C and will presumably come to your house to view the car. I think you are overly worried about revealing your name and address.

Any attempt to hide your address by proposing to meet at a motorway services or a layby is going to (rightly) put off most sensible buyers
