Electric radiators v gas central heating

Options
Hi! So we have just bought a house to renovate for ourselves. The house currently has sunflow electric radiators installed in every room. The previous owner paid over £8,500 for them to be installed!! We are now debating whether it is best to leave them in or have GCH installed? Will the running cost of these electric radiators cost more than the running cost of GCH ones? Nothing I have read online gives a very clear answer, can anyone help?

Thanks xx

I'm not an expert by any means but gas CH with traditional (assuming there's a hot water tank) boiler wins; ahhh... read here

  • Those are electric heaters running on peak rate electricity, which will be about 3 times as expensive as gas to run. They, and other electric heaters masquerading as central heating systems, have been extensively discussed.

£8500 would probably have paid for an entire gas heating system. Possibly your best bet is to try and sell the heaters on to someone else gullible enough to believe the advertising.

£8,5k would probably have put in two gas central heating systems or even a heatpump system.

As said, they aren't storage heaters that run on E7 so they'll cost at least three times as much as running a gas system. A gas system will add value to your property as well.

IMO there's no contest, go for gas.

If you assume that heating plus hot water costs with a gas system would be around £700 per annum and that electricity costs 3 times as much per kWh then a switch would save you £1400 per annum. That would make break even after maybe 6 years. The latter figure will depend on how economical you are with heating and what deal you can get on installing full heating but it gives you an idea. Personally I would go for the change.

Switching to gas CH will also add considerably to the value of the property. No one in their right mind installs electric rads running on a single rate meter. when mains gas is available.
Did you not consider the heating system costs before purchase?
