Buying a sofa from Harveys good idea or not?

Hi,

Could do with a new sofa and saw what seemed a reasonably priced one in Harveys today in faux suede.

Seemed good to look at and sit on. Total package for recliner sofa and a recliner seat would be £900 with £59 delivery and after care for 5 years would be another £200, so talking about £1150 or thereabouts, to be honest I am really tempted as we do need a new sofa.

Is Faux suede durable enough?

Been around a few shops and one thing I have found out, no reasonable looking quality sofa is cheap.

We do have an active special needs child who has had bit a lot into sofa's in the past, but what can you do, if you need a new sofa you just have to buy one.

Can you haggle with Harveys or do they stick rigidly to the sale prices?
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

With situations like this work the price back, about a third of the price is the product.

Its about £750 ex vat, so £200-250 for a sofa and chair.

If it was priced at £200-250 would you think it was a quality piece of furniture?

Thanks, but aren't all shops the same, I mean unless you are going to make it yourself, I can't see myself getting anything as you have quoted at that price, unless second hand.

Not sure about harveys, but if the have fake sales and 'before and after event; style pricing, then its hard to work out its 'real' selling price.

DEF not inclined to pay for some additional cost for insurance, that is such bad value. Unless you expect claim.

Ikea have a good choice these days, maybe something there would appeal? at least they have transparent pricing and only occassional sale reductions.

Run a mile - avoid like the plaque!

I wish I had done a forum search here before, I wouldn't have gone inside. A brief summary:
Back in August had the choice of SCS, DFS and Harveys - oh no.

Salesman, said after two or three weeks we would get a delivery date, after several calls with customer service - eventually found it had a 56 day wait!! So early October had a delivery date, then about 5.45pm the day before had a call to say only the sofa would arrive.
It was early November when it became complete.
Customer Service were useless - never had a call back, never 'escalated' up, not allowed to give CEO's/head-office details.

Complaints go back years, so have no interest in changing or getting better.

Similar story here. I went into a store and was told 30 days for delivery and even given a date. Date came but the sofa did not. When I called they 30 day turned into 4 months!
  • Well they do seem to be upfront with delivery dates with me, with in store colour 4-5 weeks other colour 16 weeks.

Also, to be fair, you can Google and furniture company for reviews and they will all have terrible reviews as bad experiences are the ones that tend to be shared. When we got our sofa delivered, we were extremely happy with it and get complemented all the time so I hope that answers you question regarding quality.

We also took out some protection thing but I can't recall what it covered so can't comment on that part of your question. In regards to haggling, we bought our during the sales and the first thing that came out of the salesman's mouth (in two separate locations we visited) is that the prices are as low as they are going to get.

Only thing to keep in mind with Harvey's, and probably most furniture stores to be fair, is that your delivery may be significantly late. If that is the case, kick up a storm (I get my wife to do it as I don't have the energy to) and they should compensate you. We got free delivery and £200 compensation.

do like all the rest sensible people, get a nice barely-used £5 sofa from ebay/gumtree and you can treat it as disposible if you want to..
No delivery charges and no scam insurance-plans needed..

I remember a salesman at DFS remark that he knows of some customers who change the sofas etc., every two years - they just like a change.
    Where do this go?
Do you have a local Heart Foundation Home & Furniture store/charity shop? I don't know about DFS but Harveys provided me with a Heart Foundation 'collection' leaflet. My old suite was going there anyway, it would be worth a visit, it surprising the range of stuff they have and how good it is.
