I know where you are coming from and I would normally agree but I think they are genuine this time round as it is my understanding that Lumia 950 has been officially discontinued. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft had some laying around for cases exactly like this but I somehow doubt EE will bother finding out.
  • Also, I suppose I could always get in touch with Microsoft directly as the phone is just out of warranty so they might be more forthcoming than EE.

It is not worth EE asking any manufacturer for just one phone. They have processes in place and if a phone is discontinued and the stock used, that's it.

Usually a replacement is offered via their internal systems and if a 'like for like' is not available, a DMR (or different model replacement) is offered..the DMRs are usually selected due to having similar features (I'll not get into the argument about whether the new one they offered is similar).

Upshot is, they could have offered you the original one and then by the time they had checked the system again, someone else had taken it/them. There is no way to stop that either.

There has been no 'change of mind' by them, it's just internal systems and processes. Being offered £100 at the end of a 24 month term is very reasonable.
