Tradesmen and No 2s

You have a couple of guys in for a short time e.g. 30 minutes, after they've gone you realise - because of the mess left that one has done a No 'two' in the bathroom.

How do you react?

I had a CCTV guy on site leave one floating in a decommisioned toilet. No loo roll in there and no running water in that building as we were replacing the lead supply. I didn't hire them, the client bought them in direct.

He was a nightmare, made ridiculous shortcuts and then would blame stuff on me when I was the one chasing him around trying to things done with some attention to detail and my guys were having to relay floorboards after he was leaving them up everywhere.

I'll just deal with stuff without moaning usually, but I ended up having to defend myself via email to his boss and my client. I did it by writing the full list of his misdemenours and put it in there because it made the list more satisfying and made me look like an angel for having to get a bucket and flush it for him.

And no one is impressed by people who don't wipe their backsides!

It wasn't using the toilet that was a problem, it was that he knowingly left it for someone else to find and what that said about his general attitude.

Well, I'd rather have that than somebody distracted from the, er, job at hand by the need to go.

Everybody s**ts, that's what toilets are for after all.

Chuck some bleach down the loo? What other way is there to react to a normal bodily function?

For number 2's I normally go in the kitchen sink when in a customers house so I don't get any complaints when they check the toilet. For a pee I do what all tradesmen do and either use the water tank in the loft or do it in the kettle just before we leave.

Oh I forgot to add, if no kitchen roll is available a tea towel can be used for wiping.

Ignoring the mess issue for a second, if you've allowed somebody to use your loo I don't think it's appropriate to voice an opinion on what they've done in there, provided it's normal toilet behaviour e.g. not doing a handstand on the loo or flushing sandwiches!

If they've left a mess and there was a toilet brush, cleaning stuff and air freshener available for them to use I wouldn't be impressed, but aside from cleaning up, the only thing I would do would be to consider whether the standard of their other work made up for it. If it did, I'd ignore it. If not, I'd not use them again.
  • Regard it as showing an obvious inattention to detail and presume they would be the same regarding their work - and be looking for an alternative workman (in the hopes of getting one that did pay attention to detail).

I'd also be wondering whether they were a bit sexist - workman = presumably a man? Me - quite definitely a woman. So I would be wondering whether he thought it was my job to do his housework - because of being a woman. Another black mark against him then.

you say a number two in the bathroom, do you mean the toilet or that they had a poop on the bathroom floor, or in the bath/sink?

I'd read money's post again, because that isn't what she was saying.

The main thing I would be concerned about is whether they'd bothered to wash their hands.
