Where I work there would be no pay rise because you are still doing a role at the same level. You could potentially push for a small bonus however that would depend on your performance in the role.

What was the person you were covering earning? If you know?
Presumably if it was the same grade as you so probably the same salary. With this in mind I wouldn't be asking if I was eligible for a pay cut if the situation was reversed.
I can understand the frustration but that's the trouble with pay grading as opposed to salaries based on individual merit and job role.0
