Am I entitled to a pay increase?

I joined a Local Authority as a Manager in May 2015, on my second day there, I was asked would I cover another Manager's team, whilst they were on maternity leave. As I was new, I accepted, fast forward to April 2016, the manager hands their notice in and does not return to work. I have subsequently covered the team since May 2015, with still no replacement lined up. I originally was managing 2 people, whilst covering the other team, I manage a total of 11 people. One of the members of the team I have covered has been given an honorarium, to cover her stepping up in relation to dealing with more detailed work, but I have not. As my work has increased, but the variety hasn't, does this mean I am not eligible for a temporary increase?

Providing you are being paid National Minimum Wage or above, any pay increase is purely at the discretion of your employer. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

You need to speak to your manager. I don't know how things work within the LA, but in DWP if you were covering the work of a higher grade (known as Acting up), you would be entitled to additional payment for that period.
It's possible that, because you took on the role very soon after starting, management haven't even considered that fact.0 -
The grade of the other manager is the same, as I said, it is the scale of the responsibility, rather than too much different work.0

Sorry I misread your OP. All you can do is raise the question. You certainly won't get any more money if you don't ask.0

As far as the law is concerned, lincroft1710 is correct. Legally speaking if paid NMW, no you aren't.0

Depending on the size/makeup of your company you could request a job description evaluation. If that isn't possible, then put together a business case outlining how your responsibilities have increased, maybe include examples of similar roles from the open market. Mention how you have happily taken on this new challenge, refer to any positive feedback you've received and state you would like to discuss an increase in salary in line with this new role.
The risk of course is they bump you back down and bring someone else in, so don't aim too high!0 -
you said you were hired as a manager and then covered another management post? then i would say that is not a higher grade, it is simply a secondment sideways so you may not be entitled for any extra as your roles are both on the same level.
at one point i was line managing double what my co-manager was but we still got paid the same.CCCC #33: £42/£240

Does your job description say how many staff you'd manage?0
-
Job description doesn't state how many people I manage, nothing has ever been put in writing since I started this 'temporary ' role0
-
I don't see why the increase in staff is relevant then so wouldn't see any need for a pay increase.
Where I work there would be no pay rise because you are still doing a role at the same level. You could potentially push for a small bonus however that would depend on your performance in the role.0
