Crikey I turn my back for a few days and you have made an accidental Motorhome purchase :T That will be a great start to Mr SL's retirement.

I laughed at Mr SL's romantic proposal.......very similar to Mr Mee's proposal to me. Some friends of ours got engaged and he said we can get engaged too, if you want ? :rotfl: I then went on to pay for my modest engagement ring and he still hasn't paid me back 37 years later. I suppose I ought to let him off now.

Very different now in the age of Facebook and Instagram proposals, if you haven't gone down on one knee, in a very glamorous location, with a very large sparkly ring placed on freshly manicured fingers, have you even got engaged ?

Thanks SL (and Meowcom) I've seen pix of those at American BBQs, and at Glyndebourne come to that - they look great, and I certainly didn't know you could get one for a berlingo. I really, really like the sound of that.

Are you still happy with the idea of the motorhome?

Thank you redo. I used Advance as a specialist broker this morning and that gives them access to a specialist policy from LV that we cannot get by going direct. My existing car is insured with them (with 9+ years of NCD) although my NCD relates to the main car, it apparently shows I am a good risk so the full cover (includes windscreen, keys, locks, legal, contents and EU) for just a smidge over £250 with no NCD and there is a flexible mileage option (so if I want to increase this I can add it)

This set of pictures (the first five or so) shows the layout (last relevant pic shows the L-shaped kitchen area) here.

In terms of contents, we have the national collection of camping equipment so will redeploy - same with the picnic basket contents. Not sure if we will bother with the chemical toilet or the shower much as we currently go to camp sites with good facilities, and we have a compost toilet that we take...

DS is coming over later and it may be time to have a proper camping equipment conversation with him. We have some brilliant tents in storage :o.

Busy Mee1 :rotfl: actually rather reassuring that it isn't just my DH! we really do have so many parallels in our lives. How exciting for you - it's a year to go now, isn't it? - DH here has just 14 more get-ups - less than 3 weeks left.

I don't really hold with extreme location or situation "showing off" as I refer to it. I did have a big wedding but I arranged it with a taxi instead of wedding cars, good wine and use of a local sports club with a marquee on the field and friends playing in the band. It was all about friends and family enjoying our day with us. Bless him, my late Dad suggested I could do it better than a planner and gave me an amount to spend.

We had a proper MSE wedding. Married at the registry office and a reception buffet in the back room of a pub. I wince when I hear how much weddings cost. A colleague recently paid £20k for their only daughter's wedding

Well we have got the van - I drove it home last night. A minor trauma when the main road home was closed off for works - the fear was whether the detour could accommodate a 10ft high vehicle. It could so all good. Getting it parked in the drive took a certain amount of wiggling but it is in. We will do some other juggling but plenty of time for all that fiddling about. As a priority I need to register it and tax it. Then we will go for a series of checks:
    • a service including replacing all the fluids, and the cam belt, checking the mechanical elements and things like brakes and cables
    • a habitation check to ensure the gas and electrics are ok and all the bits and pieces internally are secure and safe
    • a book-in for under-sealing to remove all the rust and weather-proof it for the next ten years
    • a book-in for re-sealing the seams to ensure it is in a known starting place re water ingress
    • our own check to see what we will do and change - early candidates are to remove the pinky-red carpet and curtains - and we will need to review the camping kit to minimise the purchase of unnecessary stuff.

  • How exciting. Yes the boot jump is not glamorous but my god it's made camping so much more enjoyable. We got our Amdro one for 600 squid but they are nearly 2k new... I have lots of other bits like blinds top box chairs and topper so it v comfortable. 2 peeps and a dog and yes we have a pakashack tent and an awning on the side. But a motor home is a whole new level I think it's so worth it for cheap getaways when you are on a long term debt journey like us. Keeps us sane. Enjoy your new adventures. Will you drive it? Is it very old? I. E powersteering?
