Why do you think it might be abnormal? What is it about you that singles you out from the other 30 million licence holders for a special procedure?

I'm assuming the renewal is based on your photocard licence coming up to 10 years. Are you sure it does not ask for a new photo? If no details have changed e.g. address then it's just a case of signing and new photo.

A post office is a post office, all the same.

You can renew it at any post office and all you need is the cash to pay it and your current photocard licence. They'll take your photo for the updated licence, it's only if you are renewing by post that you need to include a photo.

See gov.uk - Renew your driving licence.

I suspect that renewing online is the easiest option as long as you have a UK passport as you don't need to send in a photo, they just use the passport one.

If you go to a Post Office note that it must be one that deals with photocard renewals, so not every PO will do it.
