Just popping on to say well done, and if you have nectar or tesco points you can get some subscriptions using them and it works out well. Think its only available on the more popular titles but it might be worth looking into.

I've just started using an app called wallet. I only use it for my "pocket money" . DH & I both have a set amount of spendingredients money per month and both of us would burn through it within two weeks! I still have two weeks to go but have £20 left but know by keeping track I can do it.

If you get tired of sandwiches for lunch, there are widenecked thermos containers available for bringing a hot meal to work. My dh has one, and it paid for itself in four lunches :) Any time he takes it now, we make a profit :D

Thanks Joey - I will take a look at the subscriptions and see if it covers my magazine!

Thanks Naomi, I'll add that to the list to investigate. It's really good that there are so many apps out there, more chance of me finding something I get on with!

That sounds great! I am intending to batch cook at the weekend - maybe a chill or spag bol that can be taken for lunch a couple of days a week too.

I've just caught up on your diary - it looks like you're really making positive inroads to understanding your situation and how you got there!

Your description of how you viewed your credit lines before really resonated with me. Like if I had £800 available balance in my bank account I'd think 'great, we've got money so I don't feel bad buying X, Y or Z' but actually, that meant we were already £200 into our £1k overdraft facility and probably had loads of bills still to come out which would swallow that up. It's like I was kidding myself.

I'm trying to totally shift my attitude to the above so will be keeping an eye on your diary to see how you're getting on! Any help is a bonus!

The first day of February and the first day of my NO ADDITIONAL DEBT challenge which is to not add anything to my existing debts, so no falling back on credit cards for "emergencies". I know that this is not the most ambitious challenge but I really need to change my spending habits and this is the first step. I've already been scrutinising my spending over the past few days and have been surprised at how easy it has been to ignore the non-essentials. I am not expecting this to be an easy ride though, I know that once the novelty wears off and when I'm feeling fed up and bored of budgeting I will want to go back to my old ways, so I'm going to have to think of ways to deal with that.

In other news, I've got the day off work today (waiting for a boiler inspection) so my plan for today is to go through my wardrobe and get rid of anything I didn't wear in 2016. I might get more ruthless as I go, but thought not worn for a year was a good starting point.
I had some success with selling things on ebay in the past so I'm going to do the same now. Usually, I see any money made on ebay as lovely bonus cash-for-shopping and spend it all (and then get surprised by the fees a few weeks down the line), but this time my aim is to not touch my Paypal balance until the end of Feb when I can sweep it into my Emergency Fund.

I'm also planning to tackle the kitchen cupboards this week and see how many forgotten tins and packets are languishing at the back. I'll make a list of what I've got and then do a bit of meal planning to use this stuff up. I'm really hoping I have the ingredients for chocolate brownies hidden in the cupboard but I think this is a bit of wishful thinking :D
