Guarantor help.

Can someone give me some help please
My daughter rented a property of someone and has left the area.
Unknown to me she owns money to the landlord as l got a message today of this person whom l don't know or have never seen before.
He's saying he cannot get in contact with her as she has blocked him and since he cannot get hold off her he has found my name on a contact site and says as l'm her guarantor he hopes to hear from me.
I have not signed any paper for guarantor so can he contact me like that , does he have a right to ,or is he trying it on as he cannot get hold of my daughter.

Did your daughter forge your signature on the forms?

First and foremost, can you get hold of your daughter? You just say she has left the area. I hope she is safe and well and that you at least know where she is and are in touch.

You say he found your name on a contact site. If that is true then he is entitled to contact you.

If I had received this call about my daughter I would have been extremely guarded about giving any information away but I would have asked his name, his connection with it (is he the 'someone'?), the property address, relevant dates, etc. I would then have spoken to my daughter to decide what to do next. It might be fraudulent but on the other hand she could say it's all true. We don't know.
  • Hi my daughter is fine thanks,
As l take it she says she doesn't owe the landlord anything.
He has got in contact with me by social media ... Don't know how .
Anyway he says l was her guarantor and like l've said l haven't signed anything , so can he ask me for the said money he sayes he is owed.
Surely if you don't sign for anything you don't pay ..

If you didn't sign anything I'd say no your not liable, ask him for proof of what you apparently signed ?
  • A rent "guarantor" is only accepted with the guarantor being present for the signature with their proof of id which is several documents and evidence of assets /income. I know this as I had to do this for my daughters private rental flat in Kent.

Sounds like a chancer. Insist on seeing copies of the guarantee that you 'signed'.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

You also need to prepare yourself for the possibility (however remotely) that your daughter has forged your signature.

It's not unheard of, there are countless posts on here where family members have forged signatures to obtain credit.

If that's the case, you have two options:

    1) Acknowledge the debt as your own and repay it, or

    2) Report your daughter for committing fraud.
"Facism arrives as your friend. It will restore your honour, make you feel proud, protect your house, give you a job, clean up the neighbourhood, remind you of how great you once were, clear out the venal and the corrupt, remove anything you feel is unlike you... [it] doesn't walk in saying, "our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution."

We didn't have to do all this when we were guarantors for our son.

Don't do anything until you have heard what your daughter has to say...
