Avios rewards credit card

I have a Lloyds avios reward card and wonder what happens to the points if a purchase is refunded in a different billing period? Say something is purchased in the January statement month, the points are accumulated and added to the avios account and if it is later refunded, do they simply get deducted from the next avios statement?
