If you give readings on electric meter , and the meter is faulty, do you have to pay?

Following on from my utility warehouse issue which I haven't , had a response for days:
I move into rented flat . My landlady gives u w reading.
I do the same . They then ask for another, as they dont recognise it.
I get an estimated bill , which isn't so sad.
However, yesterday I had to do a test. I have to give 2 readings
1 at 10'am and one at 2 pm . The numbers hardly budged.
They are putting a new meter in mid Feb .
They said it's gonna cost . Obviously I won't be paying for that, as it's landladies flat.
Rather than risk huge bills later, I'm on a direct debit with u w
A friend of mine says I shouldn't pay as it's not my fault that the meter is dodgy. I think it's best to pay the 1st ( estimated ) bill.
Your thoughts ?

They will want to estimate you usage over a few weeks of the new meter and apply it going back.
So be frugal in that period!0 -
Thanks carrot. It's all electric. No gas in the flat
Cheers:)
My friend says that it's not my fault the meter is Dodgy . I still think it's best to pay.
Who's right ?0 -
Its not your fault that the meter is faulty but what you are immediately obliged to do is report the fault to the supplier asap. Its in the small print of the t/cs of supply. All faulty meters will be billed on estimated readings for the time it has been faulty. No free lunchesThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. There is so much debate about UW on this site, it has it's own thread so have a look.
Consensus of opinion seems to be that if you are a large household and sign up for the entire UW package:
Gas & Elec/Phone/Credit card/shop at nominated stores for discounts, you can save money.
However their Energy prices among the highest in the industry, so not suitable for a small household only taking Electricity
As soon as the new meter is installed, hunt around the comparision sites for a better deal0 -
Thanks everyone
Thought I'd give an update : meter was supposed to be changed last week. They cancelled . Rescheduled for today ,
Miserable guy came in. Did exactly what I did previously
( taking photos of bar code/ meter reading etc) . He only did this once
I did it over a dozen times.
He never came with a meter . He went back to his van for about 15 mins, talking presumably to u w .
He came back , saying he can't do the job.
I emailed u w , and told them I am cancelling their direct debit .
I told them , when I leave in a couple of months and go into my next property I am going with British gas .
Got a call from u w . They have to wait 48 hrs for report from the guy who visited me .
The lady I dealt with is fine , both on email and phone .
Trouble is, she works for, u w
So, four hours water this morning (8-12) and last weds cancelled appointment .
I am in rented accommodation till about may .
The landlady got a constructive text , and not a rant .
If I was staying here, I would definitely use another supplier.
Thanks0 -
