Using Fuel Card Abroad?

Options
I hope this is in more or less the correct forum as it doesn't seem to be appropriate under normal banking.

When I bought my last car, part of the offer was a pre loaded fuel card with £500 credit. I have used it at garages in UK and it works fine.

I'm taking the car to Europe shortly and was wondering if anyone has used one of these over there? I know I can take it and try but some idea of possible success would be welcome. I know that I am unlikely to get a good rate but really it's use it or lose it.

  • Is it a prepaid MasterCard?

If so, you don't just have to use it for fuel.

Yes, it is a prepaid MC.

I had heard that it could be used on other items but haven't tried that yet.
  • It will work as long as you dont try it in self service pumps only over the counter.

The offers the car dealers give is true its just a pre-paid card, there are no prepay fuel cards available so anything you want as long as Mastercard is accepted which is practically everywhere.

You really don't know what foreign charges will be applied when you use this card. Why don't you just use the up the card here?

In my previous job at a petrol station in Derbyshire we had people use these pre-paid MasterCards for pretty much anything from fuel through to newspapers and bars of chocolate/bottles of pop.

As pointed out above you'll need to use a counter as they are 'online only'.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.
