Changing name - Change Tenancy Agreement?

Quick question:

I'll be getting married and changing my name in March. I was going to inform my Landlord shortly to give plenty of notice. Will we have to update/renew our tenancy agreement?

Personally, I don't think it will, as I'm pretty sure I'm still allowed to use my maiden name for stuff, but I'm not 100% sure and don't want to leave myself or the landlord open to any issues. The threads I can see on a search all relate to transferring to another person.

We're in England and signed up to a joint, fixed term tenancy of 1 year in December, so we'll be here for a while yet. Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge or personal experience with this.

Thanks!

Personally I wouldn't bother. It doesn't change anything

    yep legally makes no difference
  • Thanks. I'd hoped that legally it was the same, but wasn't sure.

    You're the same person.

    No need to change anything.

This isn't the 1950s - nobody is forcing you to change your name just because you're getting married! Perfectly legal and common to use a mixture of maiden name and married name for different purposes.

My sister is approaching retirement - she's a teacher - and married in her 20s.

At school she is still 'Miss X'.

Her joint bank account is 'Mr & Mrs Y'.

Her sole bank account is 'Ms X'.

    Her passport is 'Mary Y'.

The gas bill is in the name of 'Mary X' (though council tax is in the name 'Mr Y').

I have no idea what name the house is registered in with the Land Registry but assume it is either X or Y!

No, you don't need to do anything.

In the unlikely event you needed to show you were the same person you'd just provide a copy of your marriage certificate at that time.

You can use whatever name you like as long as you are not ding so to defraud anyone.

    Congratulations on your marriage.
