Lack of communication before starting my new job?

It all happened really quickly, but early last week, I had a job interview in which after the interview, they told me the job is mine and I'd be starting this upcoming Monday (30th January)
However, one of the guys in charge of this told me I needed to bring in documentation, and told me he'd call me the next morning explaining what I needed to bring in, he then changed his mind and said he'd email me that evening.
So it got to the afternoon the next day, I'd had no email or phone call, so I just took in my passport, NI letter and my driving licence. It was another guy who scanned this information in and told me he'd give me a phone call next week (so this week). I even asked him how I would arrange sorting out the uniform, ID card and my bank details out (other employers I've been with wanted to deal with this straight away) and he said he'd discuss it with me when he calls.
Although it's Thursday now, I've had no phone call or email again so I went into the building where the same guy who promised to email me and phone me the first time, informed me they'd lost my details and the main guy in charge is away this week. (The one who scanned my documents) and sent me home with a list of other things to bring in, so address history, work history, references etc, so I had to get this sorted out in a rush tonight in a hope I'll still get to start on Monday!
I managed to get it in, but the guy who I needed to give it to was on his break. So some other guy said he has my details now, they'll phone me tomorrow regarding everything.
Something tells me I'm not going to get this phone call. It's giving me a bad feeling about working for the company as a whole, which is a shame because it's a reputable company around the world.
I've kind of given up other things to start this job and I'm already getting this lack of communication, this negligence of losing the information to contact me on.
Is there anything I can do? Any advice?

Keep contacting them.
The last role it was actually 3pm the last working day of Friday before Monday I was told I was starting (I did have an incline ahead of this time only because I kept following up, can't explain why as had a situation I was asked to keep to myself, otherwise it would have been silence till they confirmed honestly as late as that time) on reflection it seemed they would say anything if you aren't getting through to the right person, in my case I had a compliance administrator of my file who was the only authorised to give the truth. It took 2 calls.
If the date gets pushed back, let it, you really don't want to start at a place that isn't ready.0 -
Are you sure they are a reputable firm around the world ?
Re the references you might be lucky if you do get to start on monday if they want a response from the references asap.0 -
That doesn't sound like a professional company.0

Is this sounds too good to be true jobs, as I would be very concerned that my passport and NI details have now gone missing. If this business is reputable as you claim they are you need to find out who the Information Manger is and give them a polite nudge that they have lost sensitive information and you will be making a call to the information commissioners office and raising a formal complaint about a breach of you personal information under the data protection act. If you are still pinning your hopes on getting this job then its call the HR dept and find out what is going on as you have not received your formal job offer.0

I don't think they've lost my passport copies, but they lost my contact details such as email and telephone number. But something else I thought last night was that they wanted my past employment details when this was in my CV too! It does seem dodgy.
As of yet, I don't want to disclose the name of the company and give it bad publicity before I've even started, because I know places don't like that and don't appreciate it, so I'll wait and see how they change their act otherwise I'll tell them to stick it and I'll disclose that here0 -
Do you have anything in writing/email.
Pay, holidays, hours, notice, etc.
I would want a written offer with the basic particulars of employment if not a full contract.0 -

I've had absolutely nothing, just pretty much a verbal contract informing my I have the job..0 -
So yet again, I've had no phone call today, so I called into the building again where one of the guys who interviewed me and dealt with me last night told me they still need to contact my references and do background checks and things and they haven't got back yet, so I'll probably get a phone call Monday morning. I'm about 99% sure I won't get this phone call. Although he informed me that the person who was off this week, they've emailed him so he'll also get in touch on Monday. I'm debating emailing this guy myself in all fairness. Though I don't want to poor petrol on the fire and start arguments before I've even started..
It's safe to say that I'm really wound up about this though and I'm going to be pretty unsettled over the weekend. I was hoping to buy myself some new shoes and jeans but I'll probably have to hold that off now0 -
I saw this thread and felt that I had to reply as I can speak from experience.
Three years ago I was offered a job as a Service Advisor at a very well known German car dealer. I then had to ring the Service Manager twice to chase him up to send out my contract.
If only I had realised that this was the early alarm bells ringing.
I eventually got the contract and started the job which I can only describe as the worst job I've ever had and I was thirty five at the time.
I was looking for a new job before my three month probation period was up, I eventually got out after about eight months. The place was chaos, very unenjoyable to work at.
After I left the Service Manager and Workshop Controller got the sack and the other Service Advisor resigned due to stress.
Just think OP, if the business is like this now, what is it really like to work at?0 -

I'm really sorry to hear this, I hope you're in a better position now!
But before I even posted this thread, I've thought the exact same as what you've put on your last sentence, that if they're so unorganised now, what's working there going to be like? My previous job wasn't all that spectacular either but it always seemed worth it on payday. It's only a little part time job to put me on for extra money whilst at university, and this particular job is paying really well. I hope our thoughts are both wrong and it's worth all of this hassle, but I'm not holding my breath0
