Debt Free - do I need to maintain my credit score

I'm happy to say I am now debt free. I don't intend to take out any loans soon, but I wonder should that situation arise in the future and I haven't had any credit for a few years - will that affect my credit rating and potentially preclude me from obtaining credit?
i.e. would it be wise to keep a credit card active and use it occasionally, paying off immediately in order to maintain a good credit record?
