Airdrie Savings Bank

Another one to bite the dust.

https://airdriesavingsbank.com/get-in-touch/important-information/

Notification received that the Airdrie SB will be closing branches and wound down with the final closure of the Airdrie Head Office/branch to be advised but expected to be in 2017.

The Airdrie resisted the TSB approach years ago.

They claim that they are still financially strong but do not disclose where their assets will go when the doors are finally closed.

  • Very sad. From what I know, none of the trustees of the bank received any remuneration, truly one of the last few banks with ethics. Hopefully, TSB Bank of New Zealand will carry forward the independent savings bank legacy.

And yet again we see the excuse that online and mobile banking is the reason for its closure; From what I see from my friends and acquaintances, they do want online and mobile banking but also a branch in case they need it. I'm no different to that.

In reality we have a local bank with local branches trying to be national. In those circumstances closure or at least cut-backs is not exactly unique these days.

Let's get real: The only people who are going to pay a fiver a month for the Airdrie Current Account are those who want to support it as the only UK independent savings bank left. Similarly, there are better savings offerings elsewhere.

Sad but if they cannot compete they go under. Simple!

Lastly, I cannot help but think that closure is the easy way out when according to the BBC News article linked in a previous post they are "still financially strong" (quote). They could for example have operated nationally through a network of agents.
