Withdrawn from course – maintenance loan paid before I did – what now?

I decided to withdraw from uni over the christmas holiday, and have notified the university in time so as not to be liable for tuition fees this year (i've been issued only my first installment thankfully, which covered the first term). My withdrawal has been finalised, but shortly before it was my first maintenance loan for the year was paid into my account. The university has notified student finance of my decision to quit, yet over two weeks or so later i've heard nothing from student finance about repaying the maintenance instalment.

It puts me in an odd position, since despite having to pay back more in the long run the money would be incredibly helpful in giving me time to get back on my feet and have a little to tide me over until I find work. I have no idea what is usually done in a case like mine – since the money was paid before I finalised my withdrawal, is it likely i'll get to keep it, or that they'll contact me at some undetermined time to ask for it to be returned?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

What did Student Finance say when you called and asked them?

As you may have inferred from my message, I've yet to do so, I'd like to find out what I can before I make that call. I'm not expecting anyone to speak on their behalf, but if someone here has been in a similar situation, hearing from them, and how the situation was handled by student finance, would be very helpful.

When they'd overpaid me they asked for it back in a lump sum.

Add this to the fact they'd overpaid me half way trough placement and withdrawn fees from uni - and when I called the uni they didn't even know yet = melt down for me.

They then asked for it back in a lump. It's up to you. But the correct and moral thing to do would be call. it would avoid snitty letters later...

No, they own't let you keep it and whether you contact them or not, they'll shortly be in touch requesting you send it back - best not to spend a penny of it, thus causing yourself stress later

Firstly it is your duty to inform Student Finance that you have left your course and not the Uni (check the contract you signed :))
You may actually find that you are still liable for the years tuition fees unlikely but possible. Our experience was the Uni gave a four week period from when student first started Uni(September) to change their mind without repercussions on the tuition fee front. Re the maintenance loan, they will calculate the time you spent at Uni and what part of the loan you can keep to cover that period and they will ask for the rest to be repaid.
