UK GDP up by 0.6% during Q4 (Oct to Dec) 2016.
  • UK gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated to have increased by 0.6% during Quarter 4 (Oct to Dec) 2016, the same rate of growth as in the previous 2 quarters.
  • Growth during Quarter 4 was dominated by services, with a strong contribution from consumer-focused industries such as retail sales and travel agency services.
  • Following falls in Quarter 3 (July to Sept) 2016, construction and production provided negligible positive contributions to GDP growth in Quarter 4 2016.
  • UK GDP was estimated to have increased by 2.0% during 2016, slowing slightly from 2.2% in 2015 and from 3.1% in 2014.
  • GDP per head was estimated to have increased by 0.4% during Quarter 4 2016 and by 1.3% during 2016.857.jpg?w=620&q=55&auto=format&usm=12&fit=max&

Just another 150% to go and Britain can feed itself when Globalisation comes to an end:rotfl:

I believe the food figures are based on money not calories. So when we import £500m a year of bottled water that shows up as the UK not growing all its food. Likewise when we import High value foods maybe like £100 bottles of wine that looks like we are importing a lot of food but in calorific terms it is nowt

Based on calories I believe we don't import much NET calories. Also we can never achieve 100% unless we limit the UK to eating only what can be grown in the UK. Therefore it makes more sense to look at how much of what can be grown here is grown here in calorific terms and that number is high.

Do you have any actual evidence to back that up? Looking at where the food in my local supermarket is grown there is a huge amount that isn't grown in the UK. Most of the fruit and vegetables seem to come from Holland or Spain, the bacon from Denmark and the lamb from New Zealand.

Remind me, what fruit and vegetables grow well in Britain at this time of year? I remember what the greengrocers' shelves used to look like at the end of winter & start of spring and the British people aren't ready for a winter diet that consists of potatoes, carrots and brassicas just yet.

It might be an extremist Brexiteer's dream that trade is going to end but for the rest of us, we quite like having phones, clothes and food.

Phones will be produced by ex-disenfranchised brexit voters in Ebbw Vale, the Mancunian cotton mills will be fired up again to compete with Bangladesh and Vietnam.
As for food, you'll have to rely on a 100% British diet of parsnips, neeps and tatties.
Stop moaning and get behind Global Britain!
Don't blame me, I voted Remain.

Does that mean my phone keyboard will have ll on it and no x or z?

I look forward to Marks and Spencer putting the signs back up that 90% of their clothes are made in Great Britain.

Does this mean I'm going to have to drink Scottish wine?

Speaking of which, what happens when I want to go on holiday? If we're not allowed to trade any more than I can't go abroad. Still they all eat garlic and all that foreign muck and they can't make a decent cup of tea and the milk is dreadful and you can't drink the water. I suppose they'll clear the foreigners out of Blackpool and Dover so we can go back to having proper British seaside holidays.

If we want to feed a growing population across the world, we need to change our attitude towards eating insects.

    A lot of protein there..

(and yes, I have eaten insects when abroad)

Insects are the future. They're far more efficient at turning vegetation into edible protein than any of our animal protein sources.

Mind you we are a bit protein mad and probably need to change our attitude towards eating so much of it especially meat. A cow is just a device for turning vegetation in a field into protein in our bodies. We could cut out the middle man and use grazing land to grow food which we consume directly.

or we could abandon the group think that assumes unending population growth is a good thing and work for a world with fewer people, less polution, less poverty etc
