Step Change refund?

Hi - I've received a letter from Step Change Charity, telling me I'm due a refund for my closed Debt Management Plan (I remember having one about 10 years ago when the Charity were known as CCCS). However, I never paid them anything at the time for this DMP, and before I contact them, has anyone else received this letter?
Obviously I'm not gullible enough to just give them my bank details without checking this out first, but they got my (old) name and address right, and gave me a reference number although I don't have any paperwork relating to the DMP any longer so can't check if this number is correct.
Am I being too suspicious here?

If you know for a fact that you never paid them anything then throw the letter in the bin.
If you unsure on this then call them and ask.0 -
Tell them to simply send you a cheque for any money outstanding.
I doubt you'll hear from them again!0 -
Okay, I checked online and the number they gave in the letter is actually their real number, so I rang them. Spoke to a lovely young lady who explained that when I closed my DMP in 2008, the company who had bought my credit card debt had never cashed their final payment cheque, and they now needed to send the money to me. I gasped a bit, thinking I would be in line for a good chunk of cash, and she told me the sum was £5. Yes, £5. But, she said the money is mine and legally they have to send it out to me.
They are sending me a cheque and I promised not to spend it all at once.
Thanks for letting me express my slight panic on here today though, and maybe if anyone else gets letters from this Charity they will know they are legit.0 -
I have also received a letter stating that i am due a refund so i shall sit and wait for my £5 or something similar ! Hey ho better than a smack in the chops!:j:beer:0
