Replacing skylight in extension, job finished?

We currently have some roofers covering up an old skylight and fitting a new one. Before the job started it was agreed they would do the roofing works and we would get someone else to "make good". They are finishing up the job today and have said once the skylight is in they will leave the 3 beams running across the skylight opening in place and whoever comes to make good needs to remove them and plasterboard it all up. I understand the plasterboarding up but surely they should be removing those beams?

Is the ceiling down there vaulted already?
If it isn't then it isn't part of the roof. Those are just ceiling joists.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Why did you split the job like that?! It'll be a nightmare if it ever leaks....
Hard to see what exactly the beams are, but if they are the structural members then the roofers have pulled a fast one there! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Thanks for the response, does vaulted mean at an angle rather than a flat roof? If so then yes, it is/already was a vaulted ceiling...0

Okay, well then I'd *probably* expect them to trim those but I am a little surprised there's an additional layer of joists.
You've got a problem because you've got more than one person on a job. This is the risk. Who is responsible for exactly.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

We had a couple of guys come round to quote and they all said they would do the roof work to fit the new skylight but not plasterboard it up and paint i.e make good...which seems sensible to me... but leaving the pieces of wood running across makes no sense to me.
heres a few more pics if it helps?

Cutting and trimming and possibly strengthening the rafters is a job for a carpenter not a roofer.
"Make good" is a very vague description. The scope of works should have been agreed before the quotation was accepted.
How much is the installation of the rooflights?
Oops just saw second photo showing "beams" are the ceiling joists, comments still apply.0 -
I must point out they haven't left just yet however they have indicated they will be removing the plasterboard and then thats about it saying the decorator needs to build up a box and plasterboard around.
When the guy came round to quote make good was discussed as plasterboard up the gaps and paint...which is pretty clear to me! Guess I'll need to pull them up on it which will be fun0 -
The cost was £1000 excluding the cost of the Velux which seemed about right as we had a few quotes?0

Ok I found the quote with a description of what was agreed!
Labour only, Customer to supply the window and flashing kit.
1. Take out the existing Velux window.
2. Felt and batten and tile in this area to match existing.
3. Strip out roof tiles as required.
4. Cut out area existing timber works, strengthen as
required using like for like timber and fixings.
5. Fit the new Velux window with the flashing kit.
6. Tile in using the existing tiles, replace any defective
tiles like for like matching as best as possible.
7. Take away all rubbish leaving the site clean and
tidy.0 -

I would interpret that as cutting trimming and strengthening the rafters AND ceiling joists. However £1000 seems a bit light so either they under estimated the extent of work required or they are very cheap. Neither is good.
I think you have more problems than that though. Did they put those vertical struts in taking the weight of the trimmed rafters on to the ceiling? Are the ceiling joist strong enough to take the extra weight? How are they going to trim the ceiling? Did/do they need to double up the rafters/ceiling joists either side of the opening?0
