Tesco Clubcard Credit Card and 0% purchases

Options
Hi,

I have a question I'd like some advice on. I took out a new Tesco Clubcard Creditcard in November, to transfer a small existing balance from a NatWest card and make use of no interest on purchases for at least a year (I forget the exact duration now)

I transferred the balance interest free and made some purchases, at the end of the first month when I got my statement I just paid the minimum amount. No interest as expected.

However, my last two statements I've been charged interest on purchases. The card is supposed to be no interest on purchases so what's going on?

I will phone Tesco but wanted to know if there was something obvious I'm being dim about.

I suppose if I have somehow got the wrong deal that I expected I can just transfer the balance 0% to a new card and be done with Tesco.

Any advice is welcome!
Thanks

    Which one have you got?
You don't appear to know the length of the purchases offer but some of these cards have only 1 month on purchases ....
  • You are right I don't know exactly, i have 12 months in my head because I was thinking I had to pay it by next November. As it was the main reason I was getting the card I should have made sure it was one with no interest on purchases.

The top package you linked looks familiar but maybe with a year interest feee not 28months. I've paid all my bills on time so it's not that.

I can't find any mention of a specific package on statements or the app or website in my account, just Tesco Clubcard credit card which they all are versions of.

It looks like I'm just going to have to get another card and do a BT.

It sounds (to me) that because you've mixed both Purchases and Balance Transfers and failed to clear the statement in full that they've applied interest to the full amount.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.
  • I'm sure you retained the T&Cs sent with the card.

    What do they tell you?

This sounds like what's happening with the interest, but I'm as sure as I can be that I applied for the right card, being the sole purpose that I wanted it for. Still it's possible I made a mistake and am literally paying for it. I'll apply for a new card with 0% BT and make sure I get the right one this time (Don't need to make more purchases so 0% on that isn't as important)

This is another problem, I did the application online and anything I downloaded at the time I don't have as I'm on a new computer now. If they sent the usual leaflet I can't find that either. I only have the PIN letter and the letter the card arrived on. Both only say Tesco Credit or Tesco Clubcard Credit card.

I find it hard to believe that nowhere does it say the type of card I have, not on statements, the letters or anywhere to be found in online banking or the app. Those leaflets also are pretty generic and you usually have to find your package in them yourself which would leave me in the same situation (as I believe I have the package I think I applied for so...)

I accept that there is a possibility that this is all my fault, that's fine mistakes happen. I'll give them a ring and probably get told I got the wrong package, I certainly can't prove otherwise.

I was mainly posting here as others may have had a similar issue (if there was one) and I recently read about the credit card 0% on purchases period Tesco did over Xmas which apparently wasn't quite clear the purchases qualified only if bought in Tesco. I thought maybe I missed something.

    Thanks for the replies.

Update: I phoned Tesco and as expected and as someone said it appears I have the package that purchases are only 0% for first month, my brain still tells me I applied for the right one but I can't have.

So off to find a card with a good 0% BT on it, I recall seeing a thread with a list here earlier, maybe I'll pay more attention this time!

I was thinking that a 1 month offer on purchases is pretty useless; better not to have one at all.

I recently took out the Tesco card offering the 0% balance transfer with 0% transfer fee and set it to minimum payments only.

I made a purchase of about £30 at Tescos with it and the next month was charged interest on the purchase (about 90p) but the balance transfer remained interest free, so it has now been consigned to a dusty drawer for the remainder of its life.

So if it was the 0% fee balance transfer card I don't believe there was any 0% purchases offer alongside it.

The reason you paid 0% in the first month is that 1 month is interest free IF you pay the statement balance off in full.
As you were paying minimum payments the majority of the purchase balance carried over to the next statement and so interest was charged.
