We purchased our new house in November are are just getting used to all the niggles and bodges left for us to discover.
Today has really been an eye opener though, I could never get the the towel radiator in the en suite to warm up, we had done the usual bleeding the system etc and could not get to the bottom of it.
Today was a lovely day so I finally had the heating switched off but found the towel radiator was scorching hot. I checked the heating was definately off but the timed hot water was on ( we have a system boiler where it heats the water separately to a tank in the airing cupboard).
Surely it has not been piped up wrong to the hot water feed???.all the bloody bathroom is tiled floor and walls so we are going to have to access from ceilings:(
Oh the joys

Maybe that's what they wanted?
Some people like hot towels all year round. Usually you'd connect it to electric as well as the heating system so it is a bit weird. Perhaps they were trying to save money.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

I've owned three houses and they've all had towel rails that get hot when the heating or hot water are on. It's perfectly sensible.
Edited to add: Ah, just seen that yours doesn't get hot when the heating is on? That is odd.0 -
Im sure its not meant to be like that as the one in the family bathroom comes on just with just the heating.
There is no electric feed as I did check that.
Thanks everyone.

Are you sure there is no electric feed to it?
My bathroom (towel rung type) radiator is a dual set-up thing. It is on automatically when my gas central heating is on.
Apart from that - I could switch it on manually by pushing an electric switch nearby. That's because I had the house set-up so that that radiator could work off electric if I wanted it to - so that I could still dry towels on it even if the central heating wasnt on.
EDIT; just taken a quick look at mine and one can see an electric "box" on wall by base of it and a wire coming off that up into base of radiator. But I don't know whether there is a way that electric could be fed into a radiator without seeing something like that nearby?? The other evidence of this is a switch that looks like somewhat like an electric light switch on a nearby wall outside the bathroom. Have you checked the walls immediately outside your bathroom for any switches that dont seem to operate lights?0 -
Money....
OP has already stated there is no electric feed.0 -
My towel rails are linked with the hot water not the rest of the heating. I actually thought that was the way it was supposed to be because you need hot towel rails to dry towels all year round. You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0

Sounds like a pretty reasonable way to do things; beats damp towels.0

It can be done either way. I suppose arguments could be made for both approaches, depending on many variables and preferences. Add the chance to use an electric element as well......Rain_Shadow wrote: »My towel rails are linked with the hot water not the rest of the heating. However, I know we only switch our electric one on for visitors! :rotfl:0 -
My parents' towel rail works with the hot water (built 1968). In fact, when the moved there in 1971 that was the only heating upstairs apart from one small radiator on the landing. Tell the young of today, and they don't believe you...
They've since had radiators put in all the bedrooms, but kept the towel rail as it was. It means the bathroom is always toasty warm, seems like a very sensible system to me.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0
