How should I pay tradesmen over £5000?

This is very topical for me - my bank closed the branch in my local high street this very week!.... and yet every time a bank threatens to close more branches there is huge outcry of anguish!
No huge outcry from me - it would be hypocritical of me to complain as I've only been in there twice in two years. I almost everything online, and only ever visited the branch to pay in cheques. Now I can do this at the post office instead, or by mail.0 -
Last year I had the side of the house tile hung. I paid by bank transfer for the materials when they arrived on site. Then I paid the remainder when the job was done to my satisfaction. All very pain free.
It can be a good idea to transfer a small amount first, so as to be sure that the money has gone into the correct account. Then transfer the bulk of the money.0 -
Well there is nothing stopping you being who you want . Makes this forum and the world more interestingmoneyistooshorttomention wrote: »So - I'm the one who is "customer" - that phrase about whose interests come first (so businesses are based around doing what suits us) and will continue with cheques as far as possible for as long as possible.
As you say if the banks ever get their act together - they will force your hand but until then - it ain't per se broker for you.
According to BBC in 2009 this was to happen in 2018 - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8414341.stm
Denmark did it in 2016.
But as ever the Sun are to the rescue with this https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/2617112/diego-costa-chelsea-fans-chinese-super-league/
And in 2016 the BBC seem to concur - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-36345676 if not on how footballer receive their transfer monies. Cheques will live on for now.I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.0 -
End of the month for me today, all business bills made by bank transfer including salaries and the boss' tax. On the way home via Tesco used their ap PayQwiq and Iceland using Apple pay on my phone. Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama

Thank you to everyone who has contributed on this thread.
Firstly, there is and never was a possibility of me paying by cash. Those people up in arms about "standing in a queue for hours to pay in a cheque" are being a *little* OTT, but I won't be paying by cheque either, thanks to the amount of sensible advice on this post.
I'll pay by bank transfer, but all I was trying to find out is if I am protected for so much money if something minor or catastrophic goes wrong.
As for the overly-sarcastic post, I'm not going to dignify it with a reply.
Again, thanks everyone - this thread has been a huge help!0
