Dog Allergy Advice

Hi, I am new to the forum and am happy to see this post on skin issues and itchiness. My pup is going through the same thing and we are looking at testing, too. I found this informative site that has a few great articles on allergies and skin.
I'm not allowed to post links as a new user but the site is Vetary. The articles are Atopy in Dogs and Atopic Dermatitis in Dogs.
Reading these articles has given me insight and now I know what questions to ask next week when we see the vet. I think I may try an antihistamine, but for sure my little girl will need some cream or ointment from the vet to soothe her feet and begin the healing as we sort out the issue. Good luck and if I learn anything at the vet, I will pass it on!0 -

We had the same problem with our Lab. He has been itching for most of last year and the Vet eventually did an allergy test at the beginning of the year. Ours was just a blood test but tested over 500 different things. Turns out he is allergic to mites (all sorts) as well as mould. He is currently on Apoquel which is the only thing that makes him stop itching. We have tried Pirotine, Apple Cider Vinegar and nothing helped. We are now waiting for the Vet to make up his Immunisation injections to build up his own antibodies and we hope it will all be done within 1 year and he will be itch free.0

It might be worth giving the old fashioned Thornit power a go. when Dexter's ears were playing up, even the Vets medication didn't help. But a week of using the good old Thornit Powder things quickly got better.
You can Dust Thornit onto the pads of your furrys feet with a small makeup brush, get into all the nooks and cranny's and anywhere else you think is itching.
You have nothing to lose and it wont hurt hurt your dog and that's the main thing.
its not expensive and a bottle will last you years, its a bit smelly though
I hope you get to the bottom of it fast, its not nice watching your furkid suffer xxxx
PS have you tried cutting Chicken from the diet? xRIP TJ. You my be gone, but never forgotten. Nothing was helping Zara's skin issues till she was put n Apoquel - at the time (2 years ago?) there was a massive shortage of Apoquel all over and it was not easy to get hold of but my then vets had enough supply.
All Zara's skin issues (paws licked raw, butt lickining etc etc) dissapeared on Apoquel BUT after about a year she started getting quite a few small cysts on her skin - I stopped Apoquel for about a year.
Few weeks ago she started to chew n her paws and butt again, als has "rash" on her belly that does not want to go away and she licked side of her leg raw.
I have put her back on Apoquel few days ago and will see if this clears up. It is only available on prescription from the vets.
Please do not give antihistamines to your dogs without checking the brand with your vet first. Some are ok and some are definitely not so please do not just give those to your dog xx0 -
I had a Shar Pei with lots of allergies. Believe me when I say we tried everything. What worked for us is as follows:
Get an allergy test done. It is expensive but worth it.
I'd recommend checking for mould. Changing carpet to laminate. Wash bedding with NO detergents or fab conditioners, and on a high temperature to kill dust mites. Do this often.
With food, grain free only. If you feed kibble, use a salmon based diet. Wafcol do a Salmon and Potato variety which is very good. Another option is Pure pet food which is as close as it gets to raw, look it up. You're dog will go mad for this.
Use a high quality Pro biotic supplement. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Advanced-Probiotic-Prebiotic-Digestive-Manufactured/dp/B01DCNI1VQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1487796877&sr=8-3&keywords=dog+probiotic
Get some malaseb and soak/wash the dogs feet every other day. Some people will say it drys the feet out, but it works!
I hope the above helps. Once in a routine, its no bother at all.

Hello,
I had a similar problem with my puppy.
With us, we found that it was an allergy to grass, so going for walks weren't as enjoyable for him as we thought.
We've tried a number of things, allergy tablets, medicated sprays and avoiding grass all together.
What worked for us is buying some little socks/shoes for him to wear when he went nibbling. It stopped his paws from getting so red and sore.
It really is trial and error. What worked for us for one month would change the next.
Have you tried going to an alternative vets, who could provide a second opinion, as to what could be the problem?0
