Post Office bank account transactions aren't always instantaneous, for most banks the transaction isn't added for 3 days if paid in at a Post Office.

Well if that's an issue you'd choose a bank that does offer instantaneous transactions at the post office. When I deposit or withdraw cash at the post office, my balance online and at cash machines is updated immediately.

Yes, poorly worded - by "standing" DDs I meant direct debits already running on the account, most banks offering incentives require these active at the point of switching, they won't accept them as add ons later.

Out of interest, what are the three banks that don't require DDs for an incentive?

    Tesco - who else ?

Tesco do not offer a switching incentive.
The three I know of that do and have no requirements for any DDs to be switched in order to gain the incentive are

    First Direct
HSBC (requires 2 DDs or SO)
Halifax (Only requires DDs for the ongoing £3 monthly reward)

Although I think when they ran their (selected customers only!) clubcard points switching incentive last year, that too did not require DDs?

    N&P weren't a bank, and infact aren't even a building society anymore.

All customers of N&P are members of the Yorkshire Building Society The N&P is a trading name of Yorkshire Building Society so it is misleading to say it isn't a building society. The Gold Current Account is a share account with a building society
  • If I want to pay in a cheque into a number of my current accounts, I have to get a paying in slip and an envelope from my bank then hand it over at the PO counter. A bank branch I can just walk in with the cheque and have it deposited into my account instantly.

PO only good if you want a balance enquiry or you want to draw out your last £2.50.
  • Apologies for digressing - on the subject of cheques, I learned something new relatively recently.

I have an account with Bank of Scotland and (about 18 months ago) when I paid in a cheque from a person who was also a customer at the same branch it was credited immediately to my balance, no 4-5 working days clearance period.

The teller explained that because the branch could verify that there were sufficient funds in the other persons account it could be credited to me without delay.

Apparently that has now stopped and all cheques are subject to the normal waiting time.

Not sure if this was only a BoS procedure or not.

All the clearing banks used to offer it as they don't need to clear a cheque issued at the same location. They could always insist on standard clearing times, if they deemed it appropriate.
