Mistake cost a lot!

Greetings and I hope somebody out there may be able to help with this! Last night, my friend booked a return flight for herself and 3 friends to Croatia with MY TRIP. COM. 2 hours later she realised that she had booked the wrong return flight so called them this morning. She said she would cancel the flights and re book today making sure the return flights were correct. She was told that a manager would call her back telling her how much the cancellation fee would be. The total cost of the flight was £827.00 and she was told, on the phone, the cancellation fee was £21 per person. She has now been told that the amount she will be refunded is only £185.00!! Obviously she is shocked as she has lost is over £600.00 for making a mistake. Is this a case of having to bite the bullet for going through an agency, or is there agency by course of action she could take. Any advice would be welcome!! Many thanks to all as always!!

Are there any reason to think this is an incorrect amount once airline and agency fees are subtracted?

At just over £200 per ticket they're not going to be fully refundable tickets.

Some airlines/tickets are 100% non refundable. She needs to read the fare rules of the tickets she bought. They will tell you what the airlines cancellation charges are, and then there's any Trip.com charges on top of that. (£21 each).

The airline cancellation charges would be the same even if she'd booked direct, although it's always easier to deal with mistakes if you book direct.

many airlines allow free cancellation for full refund in the first 24 hours from booking. However this applies when you book with them direct and not for booking through an agent. The ticket fare conditions and agents T&C will apply
  • I believe the airline was KLM. The problem seems to be with MYTRIP.COM as if she had booked direct, she would get a 100% refund
  • I think its the agency fees that have battered her!

But she didn't so now she's stuck with it.
  • They tell you the agency charges for changes and cancellations when your booking. They do vary but £20+ sounds right. They also have an option to pay a bit extra to reduce their charges to zero. They also tell you the fare rules.

KLM do have a cancel free within 24 hrs when you book direct, but she chose to book through some random foreign OTA instead, for some reason.
  • Yes she is stuck with it and it's cost her. I was young once and made a bad decision many a time...that's life eh? She went with the agency because, like everyone that uses them, she thought it would be cheap. Just shows their advertising works otherwise nobody would use them and they wouldn't exisit. Nobody can do anything to help and these places will continue to thrive and catch the inexperienced. A good and proper rip off and perfectly legal. Lesson learned and time to move on. Many thanks to all:)
