Well it's your home then and will not affect anything

But the disabled relative didn't move into the house until the father went into care.

That clause is meant to protect relatives who lived with the care home resident and would be made homeless if the house had to be sold.

It might be that the financial assessor has stretched the meaning to allow the family to move from their rental property into the father's house but they should check to make sure that a debt isn't building up.
    My thoughts too.
Either the move was by pure luck or it was by design. Either way I can't see anything in the regulations that stipulates that the disabled close relative HAS to be in residence BEFORE father went into a home. I would say that the couple have been very savvy in using that bit of the regulations in order to avoid the house being counted in the father's financial assessment.
Good luck to them it just shows what can be achieved with a little planning if that is what happened.
  • He had some savings to pay for his care and also got attendance allowance and a pension. The savings drastically went down as you can imagine. Near the end it was almost gone. I think only around 8k left and after the funeral costs, head stone and solicitors costs etc I dont think much will be left.

So the value of the house was taken into account in the financial assessment.

If it hadn't, he would have been able to get financial help towards his costs.
  • Not sure there was a financial assesment, dad just went private, with his attendance allowance and pension he only had to pay the other half of the bill.
We was asked by the home when we looked around if it was private or not and dad said private.

Its a while ago and I might have forgotten, but I cant remember the house ever being questioned about.

I thought savings weren't supposed to drop as low as 8K if self funding?

His savings plus the value of the house would have meant that he wouldn't be entitled to financial help.

If he had lived for longer and his cash savings had run out, either the house would have been sold or the council would have arranged a deferred payment scheme and the house would have been sold on his death to pay the debt (unless the family found some other way of paying it off).
