Re-sealing a shower base

I’m in the middle of replacing the silicone sealant in our shower, and I’ve removed the old sealant ready for the new stuff to go in. It’s not quite as straightforward as you’d expect though.
Our shower has a splash wall instead of tiles, and the gap between the splash wall and the shower tray is about 5mm. The previous grouting job was pretty awful – the flat was rented out before we bought it, and I think the grout was applied by a student desperate to get their deposit back! I’m not sure if this gap was filled with something else at one point, but whatever was there was removed and the gap between the tray and the splash wall was filled entirely with silicone, which came away while I was removing he old silicone last night.
From looking into it, I don’t think you’re supposed to fill this gap with silicone. Anyone with any experience on how I'm best to fill the gap? I saw someone using a backing rod for a similar sized gap in a kitchen. Is a backing rod suitable for a shower?

I would fill the gap with a decent silicone and cover the gap with a good seal.
The Byretech ultra 10 has worked for me. The Kit even comes with a decent sealant.

Get the Fugi tools as well as these help keep it look neat.

Thanks! The seal looks good

I've got a tool to help with finishing, it'seems going to look so much better than the mess we had before.0 -

I agree the Byretech ulta 10 does a really good job I have had mine fitted for 9 years and still looks a good as new. No discolouring or mould brilliant white, not cheap but worth every penny0
