Can I get this without flying?

OK
I don't have a problem with flying as such. Indeed in the last 12 months I have flown to Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berlin, Frankfurt, Tenerife and Faro. Maybe that will give you a clue as to why I am getting fed up.
The idea of taking a different route to the rest of the family (I am male) does not appeal.
The thought about driving is that I am in control all the way. Putting the car on a train for some of the distance is also a good idea (hadn't thought of that) however I need to be careful as too far and my 5 year old starts to get fed up being in a car for days and days.
Yes scheduled flights do get over some of these issues but often the hotels with the kids clubs (remember mum and dad want a holiday too) seem to be only available as part of package deals. And as I am probably looking at either July/August or maybe the full term break mid April I will get stung on cost.
So the search goes on.

Go by train down to the South of France!
Get the Eurostar from St Pancras (or Waterloo if you are going this side of November), go to Lille, change to the TGV and let the train take the strain. I positively hate flying and have now refused to fly ever again so we take the TGV. We always find ourselves some gite or whatever to stay in and off we go. If you book the train early enough you can get to the South of France (St Raphael station) for about £200 reutrn per person.....1st class too!
TIP:
Never change Eurostar in Paris...Lille is fabulous, you just get off one train and right onto the other! My second favorite household chore is ironing. My first being, hitting my head on the top bunk bed until I faint.-Erma Bombeck-~ Member of the MSE Celebdaq Minileague ~0 -

what I have done on many occasions(male)is to book a normal hotel holiday for the family (flying to destination)then arrange for transport for them to the departure airport,I then drive(a couple of days before) to the chosen destination and meet them at the arrival airport,
this way I dont have to fly(scares me s***less)and we dont need to hire a car when we are there,I then drop them back at the holiday airport and drive home,
This way you have the advantage of a package holiday without the hassle of flying,
why I said male/female,I know it will sound sexist but I wouldnt advise a woman to undertake a long drive alone although I know a fwe that have,
now if there are say four of you you book the holiday for 4 and when the 3 get to the airport you just say,so&so is going to meet us there,
there are cruises available from uk ports that do not entail flying and most go to the med resorts, check in the sunday papers,

One of the reasons we do not fly is because we do not want to bequeath a polluted planet, with all the associated problems, to our children.
Drive to Les Peneyrals in the Dordogne area of France (http://www.peneyrals.com/gb5.html).
From Stoke it takes us about 16 hours - we used to stopover at a hotel but now just drive straight down there with lots of stops. 750 miles and the roads in France are great.
Eurocamp are there and also Canvas have just replaced Haven (not advertised yet on the Canvas website).
We have been here 6 times with out 2, 6, and 11 year olds and they have a great time.
If you go out of season you can get 3 weeks in a van for £600-1000 depending on the luxury of the van (we go end of May begining of June). So you can eat out nearly every night or barbeque etc. In a tent it is even less (circa £400).
You can also book direct with the site which is cheaper in high season than with Eurocamp.0
