Emergency raw feeding advice needed [dog]

Options
Hi all,

I usually feed my collie the raw minces by Bulmers from a not-very-local raw supplier who delivers once a month, and I didn't get an order in for January and then I thought my dog would be ok on Forthglade/shop dogfood and chicken wings for 4 weeks [before going raw she just ate anything and would be fine]

BUT we have had some diarrhoea, waking me up at night desperate to go out, night accidents and general bad stomachs on and off this month. Initially I thought it might be some tinned Butchers I gave her so I didnt get any more of that. Then I thought it might be the duck and the lamb flavoured Forthglade so I cut that out. Now she's having less chicken Forthglades with some chicken wings and tesc0 value beef/pork mince, and a small bit of liver every 2 days, but no, still stomach problems.

SO I have 9 days left til the 2nd February delivery, and am hoping that she will settle down when that kicks back in.

In the meantime, I dont know what to feed her, it seems the Forthglade might be the culprit [but not sure].
I cant find anywhere local that sells any kind of appropriate raw, so what if I make my own mince from shop ingredients?

Could I buy some salmon, white fish, sardines, chicken, minced beef, liver and mince it all up together and portion it out? She needs 400g raw per day, less the 10% bone and the 10% organ meat. [I think 40 g each of those]

Also what about rice, its very carby and starchy but usually recommended for settling stomachs...?

I may have some chicken feet in the freezer for the bone part, but not sure whats in there, and more chicken wings coming in the shopping on Thursday.

Any suggestions/help welcome.

Do you have a Pets at Home near you? They sell Prize Choice minced meats.

I feed raw but would be inclined to feed boiled chicken or white fish and rice to see if that settled her tummy.

Boil up some chicken breast pieces or white fish and cook the rice in the water..

    Or scrambled eggs and rice.

I would lay off bone in the diet until her tummy is settled. A few days on a light diet won't matter.

Alternatively, tinned Chappie- not the dried stuff- is often recommended by vets for tummy upsets.

    Feed small amounts often.

Stop the liver until her stomach is settled, try and do a couple of days of just chicken breast, when her stomach settles a bit on that (it won't be perfect without any bone but best thing to settle her and get her a bit better) then start adding bone again with chicken wings. When her stomach is back to normal with that start adding any other meats that she has previously had from a butcher or supermarket. I'd only start adding offal back in when everything else is settled.

Alternatively the problem could be not enough bone in her diet, some dogs need a bit more than the 10% and some less. My boy can easily go up to 15% sometimes 20% but my girl is better on slightly under 10%.

Check out Pets At Home if you have one nearby, they sell Natures Menu raw. Or check out Nutriment or Natural Instinct, they have stockist maps on their websites - it's not cheap, but often stocked by little groomers etc so quite a few places to get it.

Supermarket meat will be fine, but some meat should be frozen for a period of time (minimum 48 hours but some can be a couple of weeks) due to the risk of parasites - e.g. wild caught fish/salmonoids, beef can carry the neospora parasite (doesn't affect humans but can be fatal to dogs), trichinella in non-British pork, etc.

I'd probably get some bits like chicken (fresh is usually better as frozen often has added sucrose, salt, etc.), turkey, lamb.

For 9 days, I wouldn't worry overly about getting the perfect 80:10:10 balance, but including some bone and offal should help in terms of poos not being too soft/hard.

To settle tum for now, I'd pop to a petshop and get some slippery elm/tree bark powder, it helps line the digestive system.

Just read the ingredients - H&B do one with wheat filler ingredients, which isn't best when tum's already upset.
