Good collection on eBay and Gumtree

I am new as a private seller to sell my unwanted stuff on eBay and Gumtree. I started putting some stuff on Gumtree few weeks ago and wanted them to be collected with cash as some of them are furniture. But then I haven't received any buyers interested in them at all.
Now I am thinking of selling them and other clothes on eBay. Having had a quick research about the goods collection in this forum, I am a bit confused of eBay not allowing sellers to sell good with cash collection? Is it really true? It may cost me a lot of the postage? Can someone elaborate it?
Looking at the Gumtree, I can see many people selling their stuff which are not good quantity at all. I was wondering if Gumtree is dead for selling second hand stuff. It looks like everyone putting their junk there and hoping to get cash from buyer some day.
I would like to understand the selling terms and conditions on eBay before putting my stuff on the selling site.
Anyway, I am disappointed of my selling progress in Gumtree. Do you guys sell stuff on both Gumtree and eBay, elsewhere? any tips to do it well.

You can list clothes for collection only on Ebay but most people will expect you to post. If you want to sell clothes for collection then you are better off selling on Facebook but you will still get people asking if you can post0

No it's not true. And Ebay do not say anything about not allowing sellers to sell with cash on collection. Ebay say you are allowed to include: 'cash on collection' in your listing. Do not accept Paypal if you wish to allow collection, and do not allow buyers to send their own couriers.
I do not Gumtree, I tried it a while back and found it a complete waste of time.0 -
You can sell cash on collection, but what you cannot do is remove paypal as a payment option.
But ready the sticky on selling on ebay, especially the paypal on collection items scam. If they pay by paypal you need to prove delivery.
Dont let them collect after paying with paypal and dont let them arrange the courier either.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Most furniture doesn't normally sell very well unless it is very cheap (and even then it may not attract any buyers).I started putting some stuff on Gumtree few weeks ago and wanted them to be collected with cash as some of them are furniture. But then I haven't received any buyers interested in them at all.
Is there anything special about your furniture? Is there any chance that you have priced it too high?
At least with Gumtree you don't have any fees, whereas if you sell a piece of furniture for a couple of pounds (or less) on eBay, you're not going to see much out of it relative to the effort spent listing and dealing with buyers.Philip0 -
There is a sticky thread about the issues of collection only items here:

I can only echo what has already been said , furniture is a difficult market unless it is something really special like vintage, Art Deco, G plan etc. Plain high street furniture doesn't really have a value at all any more.
You'll also struggle with clothes, the market isn't very Strong and limiting yourself to collection only will severely limit your market. check out completed listings (note completed not current listings ) to see if stuff is worth selling before you make the effort to list. If you are a new seller on eBay you will also have selling limits, so list the stuff most likely to sell as you may well only be able to list a few items a month to start with.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I bought a coffee table off ebay for pennies, the guy had 2 lovely old solid wood dining room dressers. they were in brilliant condition. Sold for the grand sum of 99p.
The guy said if they dont turn up i could have them. But it would have been such a pain to move them and it wouldnt really suit my home.
They probably ended up as firewood.
I also bought a dining room set for 99p. But the seller had shill bid on it so many times everyone stopped bidding and i struck lucky. They must have got fed up of trying to sell it.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Thanks for all your suggestions.
I am moving abroad and would like to sell all of stuff rather than them giving away. That's why some of my items are furniture.
My heart sinks after reading your comments about selling furniture on Gumtree or eBay.
I think I will try to sell them on eBay and see how they go. The good news is that I still can request to have cash on collection on eBay, although there is an option for PayPal payment.0 -
You could give your local selling pages on Facebook a go. I have sold loads of stuff over the last year or so and 'touch wood' have not been messed around too much.
No selling fees and cash on collection.0 -
How about if you deliver the good to the buyer's address if it is in your local area? Have you guys tried about it. It may save the postage and guarantee the good delivery without any damage if it is a big stuff.0

Well for a start your thread is about 'collection' not delivery.
I would not recommend delivering in person - if you take a Paypal payment, you need to have proof of deliver online. That means a tracking number and viewable link.
For furniture people are going to want to view stuff anyhow, you could end up turning up with stuff and them rejecting it.
Stick to collection only - this really isn't as complicated as you seem to think it is. If you items are desirable, you'll have no problems. If its rubbish, you might not even be able to give it away for free.0
