Enlarging a hole on worktop

I've had to replace my cooker hob...the one I've bought is a tiny bit too big for the existing hole on the worktop (need the hole about 0.5 cm bigger). What is the easiest way to enlarge the hole so the new hob will fit?

I'm a single mum and have had no hob for 2 weeks. I'm also completely broke, so if there isn't an easy way to do this without paying for a tradesman that would be great. Thanks.

    where abouts are you?

Is the hob electric or gas? If gas, you'll need a gas safe plumber to fit - he'll probably be happy to make the hole bigger too.

If it's electric, have you any friends who could come and do it for a couple of beer tokens?

no easy way without tools unfortunately, and I won't recommend you go out and buy a drill and saw (or multitool) if you don't feel confident using power tools. Is there not a friend who could help?

0.5CM isn't much to take off. What material is your worktop?
You can jigsaw it out - can buy a jigsaw from B&q pretty cheap for a generic/own brand one.

Stupid question, are you sure it doesn't fit? We replaced ours and it was snug getting in but did go in.

The hob will be quite usable if you stood it on a couple of bits of wood. For a temporary solution until you can get the hole enlarged.

Really? Wouldnt even think to look to see if you had to be on any register. Its a bayonet fitting. Id argue its more difficult putting a regulator on a gas heater and surely you dont need to be gas safe for that?

Just out of curiosity of course:cool:, what are the consequences of not using someone gas safe?

I may be wrong but as far as I know gas hobs need to be connected with rigid pipe rather than hose and bayonet fitting.

Depending on what the worktop is made of, for such a small amount of enlargement it may be possible to use a coarse file to enlarge the hole. It's not the ideal way to do it, but it's cheap :)

Are jigsaws easy to use? It definitely doesn't fit, I've measured the hole and the cooker :(
