Premiums - the ******!!

Hi,
Hi there. We are a two car family. My wife has been driving for about 12 years, I've been driving around 10. We've never had an accident. Not a bump.
I had a little scooter for a while last year. 100cc thing for popping to the shop. Someone came along one day in a van and scooped it straight up.
I made a claim on it - it was only insured for about £600 because it was second hand and old.
Fast forward to this year and our car policies have jumped from about £80 per month for two cars - £200!!!! And it's the same across all insurers. I never would have claimed if I thought it would have any real impact on our car insurance.
The incident wasn't my fault, and we don't live at the same address, so it's not like they can claim there is an increased likelihood of a car being stolen because of what happened to the bike.
Is there anything at all that can be done? Either via the ombudsman, or... ? I'd quite happily call the bike insurance company up and pay them back the full amount in cash, if it would make this go away. We simply can't afford those kind of premiums and it's not at all a fair reflection on our exemplary driving history!

Paying them back won't remove it from your record.
But see what difference it makes by doing dummy quotes online with the theft as a "loss" instead of a "claim".
If it's cost effective to do this then ensure your insurer will amend the shared database from claim to loss in return for you reimbursing them before you part with the money!0 -
Claim in your name? Take your name off your wifes policy and it wont affect her premium.
Or is it a multicar policy? Quite often they are poor value. They dont suit everyones needs.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

I'd concur on multi-car and add that sometimes they do a deal year one and then change their thinking. I saved a fair bit by going multi-car 2 years ago and this year I saved as much again by "unbundling".
I haven't changed/claimed, so have to assume their underwriting appetite for my cars, my area or the day of the week my renewal fell has changed - who knows.I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.0
