Motorway speeding fine

Hello,

I was driving on the motorway earlier and variable limits were in place. I was following the speed limit of 50mph when I saw that the speed changed on the gantry in front from 50mph to 60mph. As I accelerated to 60mph, the camera flashed me as I crossed the gantry. There wasn't a car close by so I'm pretty sure it was me.

Question is, does the 60mph limit apply only after I have crossed? I would normally assume so but given that it changed from 50mph to 60mph, it confused me into thinking that 60mph was the new speed limit.

Has anyone received a similar fine and been able to contest it? I haven't found any official guidance on this matter.

Assume you went to 60 before the sign, hence you were doing 50 and the camera picked up your speed whilst in the 50 limit.

I see this on the M3 when joining the M25 which can display the 60mph limit.
