There is a phone system called BT8500 which includes the call filtering process mentioned earlier. It works on any normal phone line with caller ID. I have had one for over a year and almost all scam calls are blocked.
One came through recently because a real person identified themselves, so I took the call, but that resulted in my reporting them to the TPS!

I have used one of these for about 4 years now.
    Simple to operate reasonably priced
It lets an odd call or two through.

  • This type of spam phone call is very annoying specially if you are waiting to legitimate phone calls. I sometimes press the number they ask to get them to phone back and then when they do explain that they are wasting my time and their time and please remove me from their phone list.

If they do not do that, I move on to phase two, when they phone back, I just say "wait a minute" and leave the phone off hook until they give up. This wastes some more of their time.

I don't expect this has much effect, but it does give some satisfaction that if they annoy you in this way, maybe the unfortunate person making the reply call may think again about doing this job?
  • I’ve pressed ‘9’ at the end of at least two of these calls in the last couple of weeks which hasn’t worked as the calls just keep on coming 2-3 a day. Resorted to ‘5’ for an agent to call me back so I can ask who they are and report to TPS as number says unavailable. Husband works shifts so it’s a bit of a nuisance.

If this is a landline receiving these calls, there is a feature called "Last Call Barring" which I find really useful. You have to press half a dozen keys and sit through a very short robot message to block calls from that number and yes, sometimes you have to do it over and over again but eventually they give up and leave you in peace... Until the mailing list is sold on again. I find it rather satisfying blocking these calls, myself.

You cannot complain to anyone: if the calls are coming from outside the UK, then the TPS has no jurisdiction. You can buy a call blocker, use your ISP's own free call-screening system (if you are a Sky or TT subscriber), or, in extremis, request a number change.
