on advice from a more computer literate friend i recently changed my anti-virus on my windows 10 HP laptop from Avast free to the built in Windows Defender. i'd no real issues with avast other than the annoyingly frequent 'upgrade to premium' pop-ups.
since having defender though i have received NO 'junk' emails to my windows live mail account. i used to receive at least 5-10 a day. i hope this is a positive as on rare occasions an email would end up in junk that was not junk, whereas now i presume i will just not receive it?
on another note: i use the chrome browser, does anyone know how to stop the pop-up from Microsoft Edge urging me to switch to that browser as it's faster, less battery intensive etc etc? i do use ad-blocker but this one keeps getting through.
many thanks.

Where did you buy it from? (If it was a local independent place then they may have run Oh Shut Up 10 [OSU10] to turn off tracking features etc. This also allows Defender to be turned off).
Alternatively ... if there's another AV product already installed (Avast, Norton, AVG etc.) then this will turn off Defender too. Uninstalling said AV product should allow Defender to come back on.0 -
Avast for normal people. MSE for Trump supporters.
As far as I am aware, if you have another antivirus installed (eg Avast), Avast will turn off Windows Defender as it's security may conflict with Windows Defender.
However, I may need to be corrected on that one.0 -

Most likely - perhaps it wasn't fully removed.
How to uninstall McAfee Windows security software using the Consumer Products Removal tool
(You might need to reinstall McAfee first before properly uninstalling it. Make sure to NOT accept installation of any other "features").0 -
In the Cortana/Ask me anything/seach box (bottom left of screen) type in programs, then click on Programs and Features and you'll see what's installed. If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0

In defender , in options and then advanced, there is a tick box "use this program"
Tick that0 -
In the search box, type services.msc and press enter.
Go down the list and look for the windows defender service
right click it and then click start
then go back into defender and follow the steps i said above to start using the program.
However it does sound like some remenants of another AV still exist somewhere0 -
