Smart Meter Problem

I'm currently with British Gas and want to change. I recently had smart meters fitted by British Gas but only the electricity meter reading is displayed on the smart monitor. They assured me that they would get daily readings but they have since told me that they get a gas reading about once a fortnight. My problem is if I switch to a cheaper supplier that doesn't currently use the smart meter technology how do I provide a manual gas reading? When I look at the meter and press the only available button all it displays is the meter serial number!
As far as I can see this means I only have the option to switch to suppliers that use smart meter technology!
Any suggestions most welcome. I've even asked British Gas to put my old meters back in but they refuse.

Smart gas meter, Landys Gyr meter, press red button, it beeps then next press should display reading in cubic metres. The meter is a standard metric meter with a smart module attached and it functions as a standard metric meter if you switch supplier. My advice is to switch to Sainsburys Energy, that is B.Gs cheaper white label brand. The same advice was given by Martin Lewis on his ITV prog a few weeks ago. The meter continues to operate smart

It usually says "meter index " followed by an eight digit number. The first 5 digits, including zeros, is the reading and the last three are one hundreths of a metric unit which are not used for a reading. There are many newer more complex meters appearing all the time nowadays which are more difficult to spot the correct reading and they also show the reading converted to kwhrs. You may have a different meter to the common ones I usually see.Smart gas is also used as a prepayment meter, hence the useless "credit balance " display . That does not apply to credit meter customers

  • Been back out again. First press and under heading meter index it shows 00219.371. So the manual reading I would need to submit to a provider would be 00219. Is that correct House Martin?
