Help with TV connection

Hello

We juat recently moved into a rented property and tried to connect up the tv however we cannot as the connection isn't right. It seems it is for a sky box but we do not wish to get sky tv. When I quizzed the landlady she told me that the aerial signal has been switched off and can only get tv through the dish. Which I think we can agree rubbish and she doesn't want to get a digital aerial fitted unless we pay for it which we don't want too. I have attached a phtoo of the current connection. Can someone advise as to how we can go about getting tv working do we need to buy an old sky box from ebay and would we be able to still watch the free view channels through that?? Thr cable is split in two with screw ends and the two ends I assume is signal in and signal out.

Thanks a lot for your help

If there is only a satellite dish, you'll need a Freesat decoder to watch the free channels. You do not need a Sky decoder (although that is one option if you want to buy second hand)

Your landlady is under no legal obligation to provide a roof aerial for Freeview.

You can also purchase an indoor aerial, but picture and signal quality will doubtless suffer as a result.

or if you were thinking of getting a new TV, you can get them with freestat, but that would be quite an expensive option, if you are planning on staying maybe worth it.

of course the new TV would work ok in other places too (without dish)

Yes, it won't work, as has been already said you need a freesat device to get freeview through your satellite dish.

The only other alternatives are a new aerial or TV over the internet.

You don't want to pay for an aerial.
You don't want to pay for Sky.
Is the TV Freeview HD or just SD? Really not worth going to expense just to have Freeview SD, that you can't even record.
The answer for you is Freesat - it'll plug into that double coax lead from the dish, you can watch/record 2 programmes at the same time, and depending on what features you're after, you can have very good on demand/catchup features. Starting at the bottom, if you want HD and recording, look for a Humax Foxsat HDR 320 - they must be under £100 by now. I've got one and it's still excellent, but lacks the on-demand stuff. Look for a Freetime box if you want that.

get an amazon firestick and watch all tv through it
  • You can pick up a Freesat box on ebay for £20 - £30 usually. No recording, no on-demand/streaming, but you'll get telly.

Humax have cheap refurbs, even of their latest PVR models, on their website.
If your area has good enough reception (some have poor Freeview even with a quality roof aerial) Argos sell indoor aerials, with mains powered boosters. Ours was bought for the caravan , but works on the house tv without a booster.

You could try an Argos aerial, then return it ( if it isn't good enough), for a full refund if you can repack as new.
