it must be the in store option unless my post has been intercepted

would it not worry you regarding the information they are asking for and the way it could be intercepted and compromise me further?

or how they present themselves as my bank but on closer inspection are a separate entitiy?

    That's from Apple's website.

I think when you took the letter in to Barclays, whoever you dealt with must not have understood you and I assume they have given your correct bank details to BFP.

It sounds to me like someone has gone into an Apple store, purchased something over £399 and opted for finance and used your details to pass whatever credit check and given them fake bank details to set up the DD, hence now why you've received a letter asking for correct bank details to set it up, and now the person at Barclays you visited has given the correct details to them.

You need to contact BFP in the first instance and inform them of the fraud and ask them when/where the transaction took place, what store etc. and you'll need to report it to the police/Action Fraud because no doubt they are not going to believe you and come after you for payment so you need a crime reference number in order to get them to remove any adverse financial data they send to the credit reference agencies.
